Juicer Types – Which Is Best for YOU?

What Are The Different Juicer Types?

There are basically two main types of juicers, masticating and centrifugal – although there are also variations of these – see below.

While all the juicers produce juice from fresh fruit or vegetables, the way each type produces juice is quite different.

Juicer Types:- Masticating

Masticating juicers extract juice by grinding up fruit or vegetables and then squeezing the juice out of the mixture. Because no spinning action is used, less heat is produced, making for a higher quality juice with most of the enzymes left intact – a problem with centrifugal juicers.

This type of juicer is easier and less messy to use and easy to clean; they are rapidly becoming more and more popular.

Masticating juicers produce more juice from less fruit and vegetables, so in the end, they can save you money by spending less to buy fresh produce for juicing. (If you do a lot of juicing, of course. If you don’t use the machine much, then it will be an expensive ornament in your kitchen!).

Juicer Types:- Centrifugal

The centrifugal force produced from the spinning extracts the juice through a mesh filter and out a spigot. Most of the pulp containing the fiber is left behind. This type of juicer tends to be noisy, messy, harder to clean and produces a lot of heat that may break down the enzymes in the juice.

While centrifugal juicers work well with hard and soft produce, they don’t work as well with the leafy green vegetables. For this type of produce, masticating juicers work better and are more efficient.

Juicer Types:- The Horizontal or Vertical Auger Slow Juicer

Horizontal or vertical auger juicers are a kind of hybrid of both the centrifugal and masticating. The upright design is useful as its smaller footprint takes up less counter space. Many models claim to extract more juice than even a masticating juicer.

Juicer Types:- Manufacturers

Popular centrifugal juice manufacturers include Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach and Juiceman. Omega, Kuvings and Super Angel make several different models of masticating juicers.  Hurom and Omega make popular slow juicers.

Juicer Types:- Cost

As a general rule, masticating juicers are more expensive than most centrifugal juicers.

How to Decide on a Juicer For YOU and Your Needs

You’ll certainly want a machine that’s easy to use AND easy to clean. Some juicer types like the twin gear extractor will be more difficult to clean simply because there are more parts to clean. A horizontal auger machine will be easier to clean because it has fewer parts.

Some models allow you use the dishwasher which is a great time saver – but this is risky because the plastic parts might get brittle and deformed over time. And another tip: no matter what type you’ll buy, always make sure that there is a cleaning brush because this makes a huge difference in terms of cleaning time.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of time chopping up your ingredients really small, then look for a machine with a large feed chute.

Speed – faster machines will be quicker (of course!) but the quality of the juice is less good, and you can’t store it for long. Slower machines give better quality juice because they don’t suck in a lot of air – the juice will be less oxidized and taste better, and you can make juice in advance and store it longer.
